Introduction :: SAMOA
Panel - Expanded -
New Zealand occupied the German protectorate of Western Samoa at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. It continued to administer the islands as a mandate and then as a trust territory until 1962, when the islands became the first Polynesian nation to reestablish independence in the 20th century. The country dropped the "Western" from its name in 1997.

Economy :: SAMOA
Panel - Expanded -
The economy of Samoa has traditionally been dependent on development aid, family remittances from overseas, tourism, agriculture, and fishing. It has a nominal GDP of $780 million. Agriculture, including fishing, employs roughly two-thirds of the labor force and furnishes 90% of exports, featuring fish, coconut oil, nonu products, and taro. The manufacturing sector mainly processes agricultural products. One factory in the Foreign Trade Zone employs 1,000 people to make automobile electrical harnesses for an assembly plant in Australia, and is responsible for 65% of total exports. Industry accounts for nearly 15% of GDP while employing less than 6% of the work force. The service sector accounts for nearly three-quarters of GDP and employs approximately 50% of the labor force. Tourism is an expanding sector accounting for 25% of GDP; 132,000 tourists visited the islands in 2013. The country is vulnerable to devastating storms. In late September 2009, an earthquake and the resulting tsunami severely damaged Samoa, and nearby American Samoa, disrupting transportation and power generation, and resulting in about 200 deaths. In December 2012, extensive flooding and wind damage from Tropical Cyclone Evan killed four people, displaced over 6,000, and damaged or destroyed an estimated 1,500 homes in Samoa's Upolu Island. The Samoan Government has called for deregulation of the financial sector, encouragement of investment, and continued fiscal discipline, while at the same time protecting the environment. Foreign reserves are in a relatively healthy state and inflation is low, but the external debt is approximately 55% of GDP. Samoa became the 155th member of the WTO in May 2012, and graduated from least developed country (LDC) status in January 2014.$994 million (2014 est.)$975.5 million (2013 est.)$986.1 million (2012 est.)note: data are in 2014 US dollarscountry comparison to the world: 204$826 million (2014 est.)1.9% (2014 est.)-1.1% (2013 est.)1.2% (2012 est.)country comparison to the world: 150$5,200 (2014 est.)$5,100 (2013 est.)$5,100 (2012 est.)note: data are in 2014 US dollarscountry comparison to the world: 164agriculture: 11.4%industry: 30.1%services: 58.5% (2014 est.)coconuts, nonu, bananas, taro, yams, coffee, cocoafood processing, building materials, auto parts1.5% (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 14148,580 (2012 est.)country comparison to the world: 194agriculture: 65%industry: NA%services: NA%NA%NA%lowest 10%: NA%highest 10%: NA%revenues: $214.7 millionexpenditures: $257.6 million (2014 est.)26% of GDP (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 111-5.2% of GDP (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 173June 1 - May 31-1.2% (2014 est.)0.6% (2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 510.2% (31 December 2014 est.)10.19% (31 December 2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 83$106.9 million (31 December 2014 est.)$104.1 million (31 December 2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 183$366 million (31 December 2014 est.)$318.7 million (31 December 2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 184$332.1 million (31 December 2014 est.)$319.1 million (31 December 2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 175$NA-$31 million (2014 est.)-$76.11 million (2011 est.)country comparison to the world: 75$31.2 million (2012 est.)$11.4 million (2011 est.)country comparison to the world: 214fish, coconut oil and cream, nonu, copra, taro, automotive parts, garments, beerAmerican Samoa 42.4%, Australia 19.1% (2013)$318.7 million (2011 est.)$308.4 million (2012 est.)country comparison to the world: 195machinery and equipment, industrial supplies, foodstuffsNZ 21.6%, Fiji 19.5%, Singapore 15%, China 12.6%, US 6.5%, Australia 5.7% (2013)$170.9 million (31 December 2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 163$368.3 million (31 December 2011 est.)$422.9 million (31 December 2012 est.)country comparison to the world: 182tala (SAT) per US dollar -2.329 (2014 est.)2.3109 (2013 est.)2.29 (2012 est.)2.3175 (2011 est.)2.4847 (2010 est.)
