Smart Solomons Pilot Project -- The Vision

Peter Keniloria, Amjad Umar and ICT4SIDS Team Members

Mr Peter Kenilorea, Parliament Member of the East Are Are Constituency, is launching the Smart East Are Are Initiative as a first step towards a Smart Solomons Vision. To realize this vision, Mr Kenilorea is working closely with the ICT4SIDS Partnership (ICT4SIDS) that is focusing on using the latest ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) to transform SIDS. The UN ICT4SIDS Partnership (#8005) is led by Dr Amjad Umar (a good and longtime friend of Mr Kenilorea) and the ICT4SIDS Team.

This Partnership was formed during the Samoa Conference in 2014 with particular focus on Samoa Pathways. In fact, ICT4SIDS is using the concept of “Smart Hubs” that was introduced in the Samoa Pathway for better regional impact. These smart hubs are now supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in LDCs and SIDS. Mr Kenilorea and ICT4SIDS Team is starting with Smart Hubs in Education, Health and Disaster Resilience. Additional Hubs with 3D Printing and Blue Economy capabilities will follow. The overall goal of the Smart Solomons Vision is to transform the Solomon Islands into a smart island and to develop the best practices that can be used to transform other SIDS. We want to make Smart Solomons a posterchild to show how compliance with SDGs can be used as measure of being a “Smart SIDS”.
